Constables press for action over Petit Port steps

FEARS are growing that the Petit Port steps have been shut in a bid to cut costs, despite denials by deputy Environment minister Barry Brehaut.

The only access to the popular St Martin's bay was closed earlier this year over concerns about a rockfall and the undermining of the steps and slipway at the bottom.

But the repairs have not yet been costed and there is no timetable for when the steps could reopen.

Now the St Martin's constables are pushing for action, with emails to deputies and a letter to the Environment minister.

Constable Gerry Tattersall said there was little obvious damage to the steps

'My best guess is that the inspection will not be this year and only possibly next year – and we think they are going too far,' he said.

He said the parish might look to contribute to the work, if they knew what was needed, but the department could not provide those details.
