VAZON sea wall will be rebuilt stronger than before, the Environment Department has said.

Work began yesterday on repairing the breached section of the coastal defence.

It should be completed, at a cost of £220,000, by the time of the next big tides in September.

A spokeswoman for the department said the structure would be more resilient than the one that was damaged by storms.

'The Environment Department can confirm that the previous wall was built of granite rubble.

'The damaged section is to be rebuilt with reinforced concrete faced with granite.

'It will be stronger than previously constructed.

'All coastal defences are monitored by States Property Services engineers and the department's staff, any necessary repairs are scheduled according to priority.'

The section of wall collapsed after a succession of storms which battered the island earlier this year and the work will take place in a small compound set up around the location of the repair.
