Number of returning graduates drops by 10% year on year

NEARLY half of graduates did not return to the island last year, a new survey has revealed.

The second of the Guernsey Graduate Destinations data findings was released yesterday and showed that 54% of students who finished university in 2013 chose to return to the island – a drop of 10% on the previous year.

But, lifelong learning manager Alun Williams said this had been expected, because the UK had begun to strongly emerge from the recession, and with the improving economy came enhanced opportunities for graduates.

With companies now putting more resources into recruiting the best and brightest, some would opt to stay away to improve their own careers, he added.

'It is important to remember that the economies of scale in Guernsey mean that companies cannot run graduate schemes of the same size as the UK.

'It is fewer returning to the island and we haven't found out why that might be, but clearly the UK economy has been improving.'
