Marcus Mahy, 53, pictured, had travelled to the country to take part in the Spa 24-hour race.

But his Kessel Ferrari 458 Italia collided with fellow Ferrari driver Vadim Kogay's car during the fourth hour of the race.

The front of Mr Mahy's vehicle was left a crumpled mess, while the other car burst into flames at the edge of the track.

The race was stopped and an air ambulance flew Mr Mahy to the CHU hospital in Liege.

He was woken from a medically-induced coma on Sunday and is now reported to be conscious, reacting to impulses and able to move his limbs.

He underwent successful surgery yesterday.

He will be staying at CHU Liege for the time being, but manager James Tuner said Mr Mahy was progressing well.

Mr Mahy had been sharing the driving with three other drivers at the event and they had completed 75 laps when the incident happened.

The retired trust company director grew up in Guernsey and returned to the island about 10 years ago.

Hill climb driver John Dunne said the local racing community was shocked to hear about the accident.
