Dairy industry overhaul scraps fixed milk price

A FIXED milk price will be scrapped as part of a radical overhaul of the dairy industry, if States members agree.

Commerce and Employment revealed its long-awaited and delayed dairy review yesterday in which it also proposes to halve farmers' subsidies by 2019 – down to £1m. – and get rid of monopolies on milk rounds.

The report, which puts forward a 10-point plan of recommendations, also calls for a more commercial Dairy, still owned by the States but operated independently.

Commerce and Employment was originally meant to present the report before the States by the end of 2013 but was delayed due to lengthy consultation and other priorities. Members will debate it in September.

The department's minister and Dairy Industry Review Group chairman Kevin Stewart believed the recommendations contained 'the right balance'.

'This is between giving the necessary protections and stimulus to the dairy industry so that it can take greater control of its future,' he said.
