Road abuse out of hand say cyclists

CYCLISTS have spoken out after being abused and harassed by motorists while riding along Baubigny.

It was prompted by a letter to the Guernsey Press from Graham Le Maitre which he posted on the Guernsey Bicycle Group Facebook page.

His experience has led to cyclists complaining about being shouted at and witnessing dangerous driving as they travel in the road along the one-way – a cycle path acts as a contraflow but is meant to be used only when going in the opposite direction to the motorised traffic.

Environment has dismissed concerns that the signage is not clear enough and insisted the network there is safe, although it did confirm it was reviewing the cycle path at Baubigny and the surrounding roads as part of its work on the transport strategy.

'I was riding my cycle home down through Baubigny from the direction of the Vale Road traffic lights along the one way road, when a group of ladies in a following car were shouting out of the window for me to get onto the cycle path. Unfortunately one is not in the position to remonstrate back when the people are behind you,' said Mr Le Maitre.

'I am sure that many of the readers are now thinking that the ladies were correct in their thinking.

'But unfortunately they are incorrect, I was in the right place being on the main road.'
