Footes Lane parking needs sorting out, say football fans

FOOTBALL fans have called for better facilities for Guernsey FC games following a clampdown on anti-social parking in the area.

Guernsey Police have warned that the road, home to a host of sports clubs including GFC, had been re-designated a no-waiting area at all times. It means motorists face a parking ticket or their vehicle being towed away if they park illegally.

At the club's first weekend home game of the season on Saturday, supporter Phil Rowe, 53, pictured, said drivers had to use common sense when coming to watch a game.

'But the problem is there aren't many places to park,' he added.

'I think GFC should have their own ground. You have roughly 1,000 people coming here every match.

'This was built as an athletics track, it wasn't built for these kind of crowds.

'I don't know where or how but GFC need a purpose-built ground.'

Visiting football fan Paul Prophet, 60, could see why police were cracking down.

'The trouble is where can you park?' he said. 'They need to have some alternative in place. Something like a park-and-ride scheme were people can leave their cars and get a quick shuttle-bus into the ground.'

Jean and Milton Carre said they always parked at a friend's house on Les Baissieres.

'Sometimes we come round the corner and there are cars parking on the pavements.

'When you have that, with all the crowds coming out at the end of a game, it isn't good and it can be dangerous,' said Mr Carre.

'I think it's right that police crack down on that but I don't see any harm in people parking on the grass – as long as it is off the pavement I don't see why it would be a problem.'
