AN 'UNSOPHISTICATED' attempt to import up to £3,009-worth of a class C drug into Guernsey saw two users sentenced to two years and three months in prison by the Royal Court.

Cousins Ian Vaudin, 36, and Mark Le Gallez, 28, pleaded guilty to bringing 1,003 tablets of diazepam into the island through the postal system, after ordering them online.

While the court gave credit to the pair's guilty pleas, Judge Russell Finch said the quantity of the drug was 'substantial' and the two knew exactly what they were doing.

The court heard that on 7 August last year a sniffer dog at Guernsey Post had shown interest in two recorded delivery packets, one of which contained the blue tablets. It was addressed to Vaudin.

Later the 36-year-old arrived at the counter to pick up the package and was seen to be visibly shaking.

On his arrest he said: 'It's not mine, I just came to pick it up. I don't know what's in it. You have no proof that I ordered anything, I'm not going to answer any questions. You would have been better letting me get the package then arresting me.'

Police found text messages on his mobile phone to a 'Mark', later identified as Le Gallez, which indicated the two were considering importing the drug.
