Speaking the day after the ferry operator officially became the owners of the 102m. trimaran, James Fulford said people had nothing to fear over schedule changes, and, on the contrary, the company was committed to offering the islands more.

The ship is due to enter service next spring, with the Rapide maintaining the French connection.

'There will be 15% more capacity in the summer and 50% extra in the winter,' said Mr Fulford.

'In the summer we will now be doing a double rotation, so people can get off-island mid-morning. We are going to have some experimentation with the internal layout, but it will be in the high 800s in the summer, and the high 700s in the winter and there will be space for 235 cars.'

The company committed to spending the money after it reached a long-term agreement with Jersey and Guernsey, giving it certainty over its ability to operate in both islands for 10 years from 2018.
