REVENGE and retribution were Shaun Ogden's motives for a ferocious attack on the owner of Union Street Stores, the Royal Court was told.

The 26-year-old, who is from the UK and fled there after the attack, was told that he had no right to carry out his own form of justice when he was sentenced to 12 months in jail for assaulting Dean Guille.

Advocate Rachel Eeles, defending Ogden, said her client's motive for the attack in March last year was not robbery, although he ran away with the till, but revenge for the alleged behaviour of Mr Guille, although the shop owner has not been charged in relation to any claims.

Advocate Eeles said there was no doubt Ogden believed the allegations to be true when he planned the attack, for which he wore a disguise.

'Mr Ogden recalls seething with rage,' she said. 'It was his intention to inflict retribution and revenge.'
