'EXERCISE can help you get rid of the stresses and strains of the day' was one of the messages at the inaugural BWCI Guernsey Mind 10k run yesterday.

More than 130 competitors took part in the event that started and finished at the KGV playing fields.

Guernsey Mind chairman John Curran said raising money for the charity's work was just one of the aims of the run.

'We're also trying to raise awareness about the benefits of exercise for mental health and to get people talking about mental health issues,' he said.

'There is a real stigma associated with mental health and we want to get people talking about it and dispel that.'

He said running and exercise was a good way of helping people manage their mental health.

'We're not saying exercise is the cure all for all forms of mental health but there are many reports that will show a link between good physical and good mental health,' he said.
