Residents reported seeing officers attending the house between the junctions with Tower Hill and Pedvin Street at around 2pm.

At 5pm a body was carried out and driven away by officers.

A Guernsey Police spokesman said the force could release very few details at this point. 'I can confirm we are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a 37-year-old local man,' he said.

Martyn Clarke, who has lived nearby for three years, said the police would not give residents much information, but there was a strong smell nearby.

Initially he was worried that there might have been a meth lab for cooking drugs somewhere in the neighbourhood. 'I was concerned about the safety of my property,' he said.

He said around seven officers in full white suits, which included gas masks and oxygen tanks, were seen going in and out of the building during the afternoon.

Despite the operation, the road remained open throughout the afternoon, except when the body was removed.

The police spokesman said more information might be released today.
