Island has to wait for racial discrimination at work law

PLANS to outlaw racial discrimination in the workplace will have to wait while Guernsey's new disability legislation takes priority, Commerce and Employment has said.

The department said that the legislation to cover racial discrimination had been earmarked as one of three top priorities.

But it said the current focus was to tackle unlawful discrimination in employment on the grounds of disability, which would be developed as part of the States' ground-breaking disability and inclusion strategy.

Another priority, which is set to be addressed after the new disability laws, is the right for maternity and paternity leave.

Deputy Chris Green, pictured, thought the two issues should be tackled together and having such legislation was representative of a modern society.

'But personally, I think they should go together. We already have sex discrimination laws, but race and disability should come together.'
