The rusting device was found by a resident with a metal detector after the land next to Fort Tourgis was ploughed.

It was half of a high-explosive round, believed to have been fired from a 10.5cm beach defence gun which protected Platte Saline.

Guernsey Police were contacted about the discovery just before 10am yesterday morning and the two explosives specialists quickly boarded Guernsey Fisheries' vessel the Leopardess to travel to the island to make the device safe.

After examining the shell, officers moved it onto the western section of Platte Saline and carried out a controlled explosion.
