ORIGINAL songs inspired by the Guernesiais language will be performed live for the first time at a special gig.

Since January local songwriters representing styles from steam punk to folk, have collaborated with Guernsey language speakers to work on the new material.

Islanders will have a chance to listen to this new music at a gig held at Castle Cornet on the European Day of Languages later this month.

The songs are also being recorded and will be added to the resources held in the Guernsey language archive to be preserved for generations to come.

The Guernsey Song Project was devised by the Guernsey Language Commission (GLC) to bring Guernesiais to the attention of the island's music scene.

  • The cabaret-style gig will take place at the Hatton Gallery, Castle Cornet, from 7.30 pm, on Friday 26 September. Admission is free and there will be a paid bar.
