PILOTS flying in today's air display helped to 'ignite' a passion in aviation when they met hundreds of islanders of all ages.

Children, parents and older enthusiasts arrived in their masses yesterday at the Aircraft Servicing Guernsey hangar to see aircraft up close and even get to climb on board aircraft.

Planes ranging from the North American T28 Fennec to the Breitling Wingwalkers and Wildcat Aerobatics aircraft were on static display while members of the public got to meet and talk to the pilots.

National president of the Royal Air Forces Association Sir Dusty Miller said this kind of event 'ignited' a passion for planes among the younger generation.

'A little tiny flame gets ignited in that seven- or eight-year-old,' he said.

'There is lots of interest in aviation, not necessarily flying, but also in design, manufacturing, all the technology that goes into it. If you ignite that flame when they are younger, it can be impossible to extinguish.'
