Living wage 'might not stop poverty'

POVERTY in the island remains a major concern but the living wage might not be the best way to tackle it.

Social Security minister Allister Langlois said the issue of poverty and how many it affected was evident because of the number of people who came through Social Security's doors. But introducing a living wage was not as simple as it sounds, and even the foundation behind the idea has stepped back from wanting to see it enshrined in law.

'From England, a comparison will inevitably be made,' he said.

'All we are suggesting is that we should carefully examine how we calculate a very complex statistic.'
