'No one works for just money'

SALARY is not the be-all and end-all of a job, business groups have said, following a deputy's call for a wholesale review into how much they get paid.

Deputy John Gollop called for the review because, he said, the £32,000 basic rate was not enough to attract younger men – which he defined as those under 50 – and women into a career in politics.

Business group leaders have countered his claims by saying no one looks just at the bottom line when deciding on a job.

Chamber of Commerce president Tony Rowbotham thought people joined a company and stayed on at a job for a variety of reasons.

'I think salaries are only one element,' he said. 'Job satisfaction, career prospects, atmosphere and reputation are important, if not more important, than salary. People have to feel rewarded, which comes through a variety of things. No one works for just money.'
