Toilet trip saves couple from fire

A TRIP to the toilet may have saved the lives of a retired couple as a fire raged through their garage just a few feet from where they were sleeping.

It was only when Tim Mileham went to the toilet that he caught the faint smell of smoke in his home in Le Loriers Lane, in the Vale.

He checked the kitchen and then opened the utility room to a cloud of billowing smoke.

As Mr Mileham and his wife Denise rushed outside their home, flames came from the garage door as the fire destroyed possessions inside, including the former golf club captain's prized clubs.

The fire spread into the utility room and smoke damage was caused to the kitchen in the early hours of yesterday morning as firefighters were called.

Mr Mileham, former captain of L'Ancresse Golf Club, said that visit in the middle of the night was an important one.

'That saved our lives definitely,' he said. 'We were in the nearest room to it, apart from the kitchen. It was right behind us. I went to the toilet and could vaguely smell something. I went through to the kitchen and couldn't see anything. I then opened the door to the utility and smoke came billowing out.'
