States approval could see new lotteries fund cultural events like Liberation Day

CULTURAL events such as the 75th anniversary of Liberation Day or the Island Games could be funded by new States lotteries after deputies backed a report from Culture and Leisure.

The approved report, passed almost unanimously by politicians, also proposed diverting any extra money raised from scratch cards – above and beyond covering the Beau Sejour deficit – to an appropriation account and used for projects that enhance the department's facilities or help fund events with a significance to Guernsey's heritage and cultural identity.

In its other recommendations the department is seeking to close its forfeited prizes account and to distribute its balance of more than £300,000 proportionately between the Association of Guernsey Charities, Alderney, Sark and the appropriation account.
