Fire crews rushed to Rue de la Saline just before 3pm.

But they said, if it was not for the quick thinking of Captain Charlie Barrett and his personnel from the Army outreach team, the situation could have been far worse.

'We had some jerry cans in the back of our vans that we use when visiting schools, so we quickly filled them up with the hotel's pool water and put most of it out,' Cpt Barrett said.

Two men, aged 23 and 21, have been arrested on suspicion of arson and bailed pending further inquiries.
