We're not internet snoops, say police

POLICE investigators never go on 'fishing trips' through the private phone and internet records of anyone living in Guernsey, they have assured islanders.

Guernsey Police and Guernsey Border Agency said that they had the potential to access data on individuals under investigation, although that never included the contents of communications.

Their powers are governed the Regulation of Investigatory Powers (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2003, which allows the agencies to request data already retained by local telecoms firms.

This differs from the snooping powers available in the UK, where controversial emergency surveillance laws were rushed through to reinforce the powers of security services to force internet and phone companies to keep records of emails and calls.
