Health board resigns after death of baby
A NEWBORN baby's death has led to an urgent, wide-ranging investigation by Health and Social Services.
The whole of the department's board has also resigned over the incident.
An extraordinary review of midwifery supervision in Guernsey was launched by the Nursing and Midwifery Council this week, focusing on the quality of supervision of midwives and compliance with midwife rules and standards.
HSSD will be required to act on the findings.
The death occurred earlier this year and the board said it was determined to find out what happened. 'First of all we offer our heartfelt condolences to the family who lost their baby.'
The department said it is liaising with the General Medical Council and the NMC for a further report into maternity services provided in the Bailiwick.
A number of 'immediate precautionary measures' – including 24-hour supervisory support from Jersey – had been put in place to reassure the public.
These include an extra midwife on every shift, a Supervisor of Midwifery to be employed for six months from now, and obstetrician working patterns have been altered. Medicine access and administration during labour has also changed.
