Sonja Sage said Mr Birnie had told her that he did not deal with women, he did not like women, and to leave his property. She reported the matter to police.

Mrs Sage's daughter, Jaime Sage-Lloyd, and her husband, Richard Lloyd, had agreed to rent Vue de L'Eglise, Rue de L'Eglise, Forest, opposite the then runway works compound, from Mr Birnie and his wife, Catherine.

On the morning of the day they were due to move in, 31 August 2012, her daughter and son-in-law had visited the property. Mrs Sage said they left after finding the house was dirty and uninhabitable.
