Recycling 'up by 10%' since kerbside began - Mayside says

HEADLINE recycling rates are just one part of the story, Mayside Recycling's group director has said.

A week after it was announced the overall recycling rate had increased by just 0.4% to 47.2%, Michael Grime, pictured, said that although that figure included the first six months of Public Services' flagship kerbside recycling scheme, it was not all doom and gloom.

As the facility which handles all the items collected in the scheme, he said the amount processed has increased by much more than that.

'We have seen a 10% jump in recycling, actually it is closer to 12.5%,' he said.

'I believe this 10% are new people and over the course of the year that should be an extra 500 tonnes recycled.
