Joe Mooney, pictured, was shocked when he discovered the piece of metal, measuring 5m by 40cm, had been taken from his Rohais home.

He believes it would be worth around £50 to £60 as scrap, but it will cost him between £800 and £1,000 to fix the damage.

There have been eight incidents of metal thefts in the last couple of months, four involving sheets of lead, three relating to brass sewage/cesspit caps and one involving copper pipes and wiring.

Lead has also been taken from the roof of a property in Hauteville, in the last two weeks.

Mr Mooney, who is a builder and runs a plant hire business, believes the lead was taken on Saturday 5 October.

'I couldn't believe it when I found the damage,' he said.
