Sewage strike called off

A SEWAGE strike has been averted after States Works agreed to pay truck drivers their owed bonuses.

Union representative, Unite regional officer Bob Lanning, pictured, said he would now work with managers to devise a way to scrap the bonus scheme – but with the caveat being that drivers should not lose out financially.

'They have accepted they have been overzealous with the way they have worked out the bonuses,' he said.

'We agreed that it's right to get rid of the bonus scheme because it encourages people to take short cuts and rush around.

'The drivers are happy with that, provided that they don't lose anything – I'm sure it's not impossible to come up with a solution.'

Under current arrangements, which date back 20 years, drivers have to complete a specific load target to qualify for a bonus. Since the introduction of new tracker systems, which record data such as speed, drivers say they have been unable to meet targets.
