He said the redevelopment's plans for a state-of-the-art hall held masses of potential to generate income for the island and provide a top arena for island sportsmen and women.

The Guernsey Sports Commission and Culture and Leisure have both given their backing to the plans, which will allow for club-level competitions and matches, together with school and inter-school tournaments.

Deputy Sillars, pictured, said several sports organisations, including netball, basketball and volleyball, were equally excited about what the new hall could offer, including the ability to host English league games.

He pointed to the 'sports tourism' generated through Guernsey FC as a benchmark for the potential benefits and revenue that could be achieved.

'You can see what happened with GFC,' he said.

'The same could happen here and the revenue could go into the States' coffers.'
