La Mare neighbours fearful of disruption

DESTROYED views, noise and anti-social behaviour could blight the lives of La Mare de Carteret neighbours following the £60m. rebuild of the area's two schools, it is feared.

Concerned residents, with back gardens neighbouring the proposed new exit road for the redevelopment, fear that their peaceful outlook onto playing fields will be replaced by school traffic and noise.

It is also feared La Mare will be helpless to stop youths, including those on scooters and motorbikes, from accessing the exit road from other parts of the playing field late at night, effectively bypassing its closed gate.

It comes as Education's long-awaited plans face further criticism from La Mare representatives over the decision not to include a swimming pool.

However, the Guernsey Sports Commission and other sports groups have welcomed the proposed facilities at the indoor sports hall, featuring up to 500 spectator seats, warning the States against any potential moves to scale down this part of the rebuild.

Childminder Michelle Brun, who has a son at the school, is among those who will see the new road run outside her back garden.

'We will have traffic at the front of the house and behind us,' she said. 'It is literally just the other side of the fence.

'We will have buses and cars running past us. The view will be lost.'
