A SPECIALLY-DESIGNED earth bank to protect the proposed £60m. La Mare de Carteret rebuild from flooding will be 1.7 metres high at its tallest point, Education has revealed.

The department said the flood defence bund it is planning to the west of the proposed new schools would have a path along the top.

The embankment would be graduated, similar to the grass mounds at the entrance to the airport, to provide space for people to sit.

Putting the school buildings on stilts was initially considered as an option under the rebuild project, but was rejected as too costly.

Education said the preferred option of an earth bund would see a large mound created using surplus materials from the school construction and run from north to south, between the school site and playing field.

'The bank would follow the ground levels to rise up from the existing ground level at the north end of the site to approximately 1.7 metres in the middle and then fall again to below 0.8 metres at the southern boundaries of the site,' said the department.
