THOSE who gave their lives in the name of freedom will be honoured in the days leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

Yesterday a small ceremony was held at the War Memorial at the top of Smith Street to launch this year's Poppy Appeal and dedicate the Field of Remembrance.

The Bailiff, Sir Richard Collas, was the first to plant a wooden cross.

'It's important that we remember their hardships, especially in the centenary year,' he said.

'A high proportion of men and boys from the island served in the First World War and it's important that we remember what they did and remember the ultimate sacrifice they made.

'As a community we need to show our appreciation and express our gratitude.'

Have your family war heroes remembered in the Guernsey Press. Email us a picture of your relatives who served in the First or Second World War along with their story to lrichardson@guernseypress.com. A gallery of all contributions will go live on the website on Remembrance Sunday, with a selection also running in the newspaper.
