The department said it would ensure the new roadway, which will run parallel to the edge of some nearby back gardens, would be kept secure outside school hours and late at night.

It follows concerns from households in Route de la Mare de Carteret that their quiet outlook onto playing fields behind them would be replaced by traffic, noise and disturbances.

It had also been feared La Mare would be helpless to stop youths, including those on scooters and motorbikes, from getting into the exit road from other parts of the playing field, such as towards the far side where the nearby nature trail starts.

Education, however, insists this will not be the case and wanted to reassure the community that all its school sites were designed with security in mind.
