Investigation is launched into hospital baby scans

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after serious concerns were raised about the standard of scans being performed on babies at the hospital, the Guernsey Press can reveal.

It comes after claims – not denied by Health and Social Services – that a baby was born unexpectedly with Down's Syndrome.

Confirmation of the investigation comes as the department waits for the publication, expected on Thursday, of what is likely to be a highly critical report of the midwifery service sparked by the death of a baby earlier this year.

'HSSD can confirm that it is undertaking appropriate investigations into concerns raised about obstetric ultrasound scanning,' a spokesman said.

'We are expecting these investigations to report back by the end of November in accordance with HSSD policy for such incidents.'

It is understood the investigation will look at a six-month period and scans involving at least 50 babies.

'The Health and Social Services Department can reassure users of the radiology services that all ultrasonographers employed by the department are fully and appropriately qualified to undertake the duties required of them.'
