'GST? Just look at what it did for Jersey'

GUERNSEY has only to look across the water to see the potential damage that a goods and services tax could cause locally, the Guernsey Motor Trades' Association president has warned.

Dave Beausire, pictured, said new figures in Jersey which showed how the number of new cars registered in the island had plummeted over the last decade should sound alarm bells in Guernsey.

The introduction of GST has been cited as one of the key factors for the decline in Jersey, along with the recession, emissions taxes on new cars and depreciation as soon as cars leave the showroom.

Mr Beausire said that GST was likely to have a devastating impact across all retail in the island if it was introduced at any level.

'It will have a significant effect,' he said.

'It is going to tip some people over and will be the straw that broke the camel's back.
