DETAILS surrounding the death of a newborn baby and the subsequent internal investigation will not be released publicly by Health and Social Services, its chief officer, Dr Carol Tozer has said.

Dr Tozer, pictured, said the death of the baby earlier this year, which triggered an extraordinary review and highly-critical reports from the Nursing and Midwifery Council, was a matter that was being kept private at the request of the family.

It came as Dr Tozer and HSSD's new board outlined the urgent and immediate action it had taken over the NMC's findings and its planned steps to move forward.

'The family have been very crystal clear,' said Dr Tozer. 'They wish total and utter anonymity to be maintained.

'I have every intention to adhere to their request.'
