Chief officer Dr Carol Tozer said HSSD wanted to give public reassurances that the department was not waiting around to publish its much-anticipated action plan, which so far contains '63 actions', before addressing major concerns from two highly-critical reports from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

HSSD is today presenting its action plan to the NMC, together with representatives from the Local Supervisory Authority and General Medical Council, so it can see and review the action being planned locally. Local midwives and the Maternity Services Liaison Committee, made up of parents and professionals, will also be invited to meet with the NMC during the visit.

Dr Tozer, who said the action plan should be published in a 'matter of weeks', also gave several examples of measures that had immediately been taken.
