Federation working well – Education

EDUCATION has insisted the launch of its federation of secondary schools is progressing well.

It comes as Guernsey's largest teaching union, the NASUWT, registered a formal trade dispute with the States of Guernsey, claiming the department had tried to force changes to the teachers conditions of service.

The federation, which seeks to encourage greater collaboration between the five States secondary schools, was launched in September, with timetables being aligned across all the schools to give students the same amount of lesson time.

'Starting in September this year, a GCSE course is now being successfully run at one school, attended by students from all of our Guernsey secondary schools,' a spokesman said.

'We have established cross-school development groups of staff who meet regularly working on areas such as developing the curriculum, continuous professional development for staff and exploring options for future GCSE examinations in maths and English.'

She added head teachers met regularly to discuss issues pertinent to the whole secondary phase and to plan for the continued development of the federation.
