'Stop wasting our money'

THOUSANDS of protesters came together yesterday and made a stand against taxes that would 'empty the pockets' of islanders.

The peaceful yet powerful Enough is Enough demonstration saw people voice concerns over issues including a goods and service tax, a width and emissions tax and paid parking.

In response, deputies, including Commerce and Employment minister Kevin Stewart, Environment minister Yvonne Burford and Vale deputy Matt Fallaize, addressed the 2,000 to 3,000-strong crowd at North Beach while often being heckled.

Cries of 'listen to the people' and 'stop wasting our money' were shouted and widespread boos were heard throughout.

Many signs and banners had also been created to reflect people's frustration.

The demonstration suggested the people did not feel that the States consultation process was fit for purpose and neither did they believed introducing different taxes was the answer to States' overspending.

Organisers hoped the rally would be the start of better communication between islanders and the States and similar forums would be held in the future.

K'han Holden was proud to see so many people standing united.
