In an open letter to all States members, the La Mare de Carteret High School PTA said all children in the island deserved to have equal opportunities and be taught in a building that they can be proud to call their school.

'Staff and students all consider the present La Mare de Carteret High School no longer fit for purpose,' the PTA said. 'The building was not intended to be utilised for as long as it has. It still continues to have to rely on temporary buildings, classrooms are small and poorly ventilated, poor heating is an issue and during winter pupils and staff need to attend lessons in coats, and frequently suffer from leaks in the ceiling when it rains.

'The students consider themselves treated unfairly and very much the poor relative when they compare their day-to-day facilities to those on offer to students who attend either St Sampson or Les Beaucamps.'
