Co-op 'will be stronger for closing warehouses'

CLOSING local warehouses will make distribution more resilient, the Channel Islands Co-operative Society's chief executive officer has said.

Colin Macleod, pictured, was speaking in response to concerns over stocks running low with travel disruptions.

Shareholders backed the plans to close the Jersey and Guernsey warehouses and relocate the distribution services to Andover at a private meeting last week.

Mr Macleod said, at the moment, each of the islands' warehouses represented a single point of failure, whereby if any problems were experienced at the sites it could cause severe difficulty.

'We have argued we are looking to join a resilient network of distribution centres that mitigate that risk of single point of failure,' he said.

Mr Macleod said detailed analysis over many years had shown there had been only two occasions of extended sailing disruptions where having a warehouse on-island would have offered a 'degree of competitive advantage'.
