Noise the big test for glass collections

MIXED feelings have greeted a glass recycling collection trial in St Peter Port, with some concerns over noise and late night disturbances.

More than 350 households signed up to take part in the six-month test, which began earlier this month.

Jean Luscombe, 67, who has lived in Les Ozouets Estate for almost 46 years, said that while her glass items were not being collected in the trial she was woken up by the collection service.

'There was a great big clatter,' she said. 'We'll just have to wait and see how it goes, but it was a little noisy.'

Vanessa Gibson, who lives in Skins Lane, said she was too late to sign up for the trial but she also heard the collection lorry at approximately 2am.

'I was woken up by the noise and the flashing lights, which was slightly annoying. However, I do think the glass collection is good for the environment and I would like to sign up in the future if it becomes a permanent fixture.'

Public Services waste prevention and recycling officer Shelley Nicholls said there were two official noise complaints during the first two collections.

She added that noise was one of the things the trial would test and they were keen to hear from anyone disturbed by collections.
