PC Christopher Williamson is back at work, but fears the incident will affect him for the rest of his life.

He said he accepted that his job had a risk element, but he did not expect to be unable to open an eye when he went home because he had tried to help somebody.

The man who hit him, 28-year-old Calvin Goddard, was sentenced to three years in prison for inflicting grievous bodily harm on PC Williamson with two months, concurrent, for damaging a desk at the police station.

Suspended sentences imposed last year were activated consecutively to give a total sentence of three years and 10 months.
