From today until Christmas Eve, police officers will be patrolling Town and the Bridge, looking out for would-be thieves.

There will also be an officer based at the police station, who will be available via a central telephone number – which shop staff can contact if an incident occurs.

Sergeant Steve Gilman, pictured, is taking the lead on the operation.

He said it was important for shoppers and staff to be aware of shoplifting, especially at this time of year when shopping areas were busier than ever.
