With Black Friday last week and Cyber Monday this week, the pressure has fallen on postal staff to deliver gifts bought online.

Guernsey Post chief executive Boley Smillie said islanders had started their Christmas shopping online earlier this year, with the number of parcels starting to rise in October. And this week they have reached their peak.

'We are looking at an increase of 15% compared with last Christmas, which is exceptional growth.

'We are working seven days a week. We normally have 10 parcel delivery rounds, but since October we have doubled that to 20.'
