Treasury and Resources, which has admitted that it still has a backlog of assessments to get through, has issued a warning to those whose income tax returns are still outstanding.

Returns were supposed to be in by 30 November.

Reminder letters are being sent out this week, but a Treasury and Resources spokesman said the threat of fines for those who refused to send them in was real.

'If, following the issue of this reminder, the income tax return is not filed by 15 January, an automatic penalty of £100 will be imposed, followed by continuing daily penalties of £10 until the return is received.'
