Frustration over long closure of Petit Port steps

ENVIRONMENT has been accused of being a 'nanny state' after St Martin's parish officials continue to face setbacks in attempts to get Petit Port steps reopened.

South-east deputies Heidi Soulsby and Robert Sillars were due to meet the department today, but it was cancelled by Environment at the last minute.

Deputy Soulsby said frustration was now mounting as the only access to the beach was closed in the spring following safety concerns raised in the annual check.

'Petit Port is one of the jewels in the crown of Guernsey beaches, it is number one in the island's beach guide and the Visit Guernsey guide.

'We don't want to go into summer next year with the steps still being closed off and we just don't feel this is being treated as a priority.'

Deputy Soulsby said she and fellow South-east deputies did not believe the problem with the steps was that severe that they needed to be closed.
