No drug rehab centre for island

GUERNSEY will not introduce an on-island drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility in the immediate future, despite indications that there is a need for it.

As part of the last Drug and Alcohol Strategy, a review into the feasibility of such a facility was carried out.

There was an 'initial indication' of a clinical need but cost implications and a lack of funding has held back any progress.

Drug and Alcohol Strategy coordinator Andrea Nightingale, pictured, said although there were no immediate plans to introduce an on-island centre, the Home Department was now looking at introducing a day programme for those returning from off-island rehabilitation, and other addicts.

That would act as a stepping stone towards an on-island facility, she said.

'What we are looking to do is a day programme that all drug and alcohol users can access.

'That would be our first step to then looking at residential rehabilitation.'
