TRAINING of student nurses at the hospital has been suspended in the wake of concerns raised about standards.

Health and Social Services confirmed yesterday that about three months ago the University of East Anglia, the registered provider of the nurse degree programme that is delivered through the Institute of Health and Social Care Studies, began a review of placements after the Nursing and Midwifery Council emergency investigation of midwifery supervision.

There are 44 student nurses in Guernsey.

Of these, 13 students in year three will return to the wards to continue practical work on 5 January as their mentors have completed more mandatory training, but 16 from year two will not do so until May and 15 from year one not until November.

'We apologised to the students today, who have faced disruption to their training, and who have been patient for the issue to be resolved, and we have explained the next steps,' said HSSD chief officer Carol Tozer.

'Those year one and two students who will not be returning in January to the on-ward training are all being found suitable posts in health and social care which will complement their training and match their skillsets – for example in the homecare service, the day service and the residential service. I want every single one of our student nurses to continue to grow and develop professionally during 2015, regardless of the date that their on-ward training resumes or begins.

'In addition I am very pleased that the institute has agreed to devise a programme to further complement and develop our year two and year three students' training. The students will continue to attend the Institute for one day a week to grow their knowledge and skills in areas that will complement their nursing studies and improve the quality of care they will deliver to their patients as qualified nurses.'
