Airport and harbour busy with Christmas travellers

CHRISTMAS spirit filled the airport and harbour terminals yesterday as families left or returned to the island to be with loved ones for the holiday season.

With only two days left to Christmas, the High Street swarmed with people buying last-minute presents – but some people had packed their bags and were heading off.

Phil and Sarah Baskerville were waiting at the airport, eager to see their son Tom, who they had not seen since September. For them, Christmas was a family time reinforced with the traditional Christian message.

'He is coming back from Liverpool where he has been on the management scheme with Aldi. They've got their pound of flesh from him – he did an 85-hour week or something crazy. He is going to, hopefully, be helping to prepare the vegetables on Christmas Eve. We are all about family and Christianity, we are passionate about Jesus. We will be going to church, then having drinks, lunch, present opening and then relaxing.'

Tom was greeted with cheers and hugs from his adoring family and fiancée and was loaded with two big bags which, happily for those he is spending the day with, didn't mean he had just brought home months of washing.

'These aren't full of clothes, they're full of presents,' he said.

Airport director Colin Le Ray said passenger numbers rose were boosted by 10% over the busy festive period, pushing the total to 3,000 a day. And because everyone is filled with festive cheer, the entire terminal had a special buzz.
