It has kept me young, says retiring gardener, 86

AFTER 22 years tending the grounds of a National Trust building, 86-year-old Gordon Collenette is hanging up his garden spade and retiring once and for all.

The former farmer has carefully looked after the walled garden inside Brockhurst, one of the Regency buildings situated near the top of the Grange, for six hours a week over the past two decades.

'I was 64 when I started helping here after my formal retirement, and it has been a lovely period of time – it has definitely kept me young.

'I've been a farmer all my life so to have this role outside in the elements, in this beautiful property, was right up my street.

'I would come out rain or shine, wind or hail.'
